PT PLN (Persero) through its subholding Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) is collaborating with an energy company from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Mubadala Energy for cooperation in the utilization and development of natural gas infrastructure from the South Andaman Block which is located off the north coast of Aceh. This collaboration was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between both parties on Tuesday (5/11) in Abu Dhabi.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said the collaboration between PLN and Mubadala Energy is a form of the company’s commitment to encouraging the use of natural gas in the electricity sector. This effort is in line with the Indonesian government’s energy transition program to achieve zero emissions by 2060.
“Indonesia has abundant natural gas potential and this collaboration will encourage the presence of alternative energy sources for power generation,” said Darmawan in an official statement, Monday (11/11).

According to him, with this collaboration, PLN has the potential to obtain gas supplies as a low-emission energy source. Furthermore, both parties will immediately carry out a comprehensive study regarding the utilization of gas found in the South Andaman Block.
“PLN is fully committed to developing greener energy to ensure a better future for future generations,” said Darmawan.
PLN EPI President Director Iwan Agung Firstantara explained that the natural gas that will be explored comes from the Layaran and Tangkulo wells in the northern offshore region of Aceh. The two wells are estimated to contain more than 8 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas in place.

Furthermore, Iwan revealed that this collaboration also includes developing human resource capacity at PLN through workshops and group discussions to strengthen expertise in gas infrastructure management. Through this collaborative approach, PLN EPI hopes to ensure national energy security while supporting the reduction of carbon emissions.
“This collaboration will also set parameters for reviewing infrastructure improvements needed to support gas processing and transportation to support energy security goals,” he said.
With these natural gas resources, PLN EPI and Mubadala Energy are committed to developing infrastructure that supports gas processing, transportation and distribution, so that it can support the increasing need for clean energy in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Managing Director & CEO of Mubadala Energy Mansoor Mohamed Al Hamed added that the signing of the MoU was an important stage in the development of sustainable energy between the two parties.
“We believe that with this collaboration we can optimize the potential of the South Andaman Block and have a significant impact on the company and the entire region,” said Mansoor. (S-1)
