Plex, the powerful media player and streaming service with some 20 million users worldwide, is one of the favorite tools of IPTV managers and other download sites. As a reminder, this is a platform accessible on computer, on mobile – via an application – but also on connected TV, which allows you to broadcast various content – video, audio, photo – shared by its members and to watch content streaming for subscribers with a paid account, and even live TV streams for free. However, even though it is perfectly legal, Plex is often accused of facilitating the sharing or distribution of illegally downloaded content, with its media player sometimes being hijacked to stream copyrighted content. Also, the leaders of Plex Inc. decided to tackle this problem head on. They sent users an email announcing that they will no longer be able to access certain Plex servers from their account from October 12, 2023. In fact, the company will close access to all servers that host protected content and who have committed large-scale violations of the terms of use of the service. As a result, pirates will no longer be able to illegally stream films and other series via the Plex player.
Plex: a list of server hosts to block
In the shared email on RedditPlex informs users that a “Upcoming action may affect their installation of the Plex Media Server. […] The IP address associated with a Plex Media server on your account appears to come from a service provider hosting many media servers that violate our Terms of Service. We will block access and activity to the servers it hosts.”. Starting October 12, 2023, the media servers in question will be inaccessible from a Plex client. “Due to the large-scale violations committed by this hosting provider, we will soon take action to block access to and activity on Plex media servers hosted by this provider”. The list of targeted suppliers, provided by the rights holders, has however not yet been revealed.
To choose which servers to block, Plex worked with rights holders and their representatives, who provided it with a list of companies renting servers containing files subject to copyright and shared illegally. The first affected are the customers of Hetzner, a German hosting provider. It remains to be seen what impact this new policy will have on users, including those who have done nothing wrong. There is no doubt that some will study similar solutions like Jellyfin or Emby, at least out of curiosity…
