Sony is currently testing the possibility of playing VR games on the computer with Playstation VR 2.
FACTS
Sony writes in a blog post on the first birthday of the Playstation VR 2:
“We are also pleased to announce that we are currently testing the ability for PSVR2 players to access additional games on PC to provide even more variety of games in addition to the PSVR2 titles available on PS5 We hope to have this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for further updates.”
CONTEXT & OPINION
Sony casually mentions this news in a blog post regarding new PSVR 2 games.
Playstation VR 2 is Sony’s problem child and has had difficulty getting off the ground since its launch a year ago. Although the system now has more than a hundred VR games on offer, really big Playstation titles that might attract masses of new players have been missing since launch.
Today’s announcement is good news for PC VR enthusiasts who might get access to great hardware for comparatively little money. It is likely to be less well received by PS5 gamers who were hoping for a greater commitment to games from Sony. Although there are many more VR games on the PC, very few PS5 users are likely to want to switch to a gaming PC or own one.
There are currently no details on how PC VR support will work and what it might include. But this opening is unlikely to result in any significant advantages for Sony, at least if PSVR 2 becomes a regular SteamVR headset. Sony primarily makes money from selling games on the Playstation Store, not from selling hardware.
A team of hackers has been working on PC VR compatibility for a long time, but the connection requires a special adapter and that is by no means the only hurdle. Sony may also offer one.
