A popular PlayStation 4 exclusive is being taken offline, making it impossible to obtain the Platinum trophy.
As we move further and further into an all-online, all-digital future, we’re seeing more and more video games taken offline. This month alone we have seen the death of Marvel’s Avengersplus the sudden disappearance of several FIFA games, the original CS:GO, et Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag on Steam.
Now it’s PlayStation’s turn to take a popular game offline. Gran Turismo Sport was released for PlayStation 4 in 2017, and all online services for the game will be removed as of January 31, 2024. To be honest, that’s way more warning than FIFA fans received.
“After the service end date, it will no longer be possible to use online services such as Community, Open Lobby and Sport mode, nor online features/elements such as custom liveries,” confirms a blog post. “Offline portions of the game can still be played, including all previously purchased downloadable content.
“We would like to thank the many users of the Gran Turismo Sport online service since its first launch in 2017. From now on, we will continue to further improve the online services for the currently available title Gran Turismo 7 on the PlayStation 4 system and PlayStation 5 console.”
Players will be able to retain all their career progress and access tracks offline, but it will no longer be possible to earn trophies that require an online connection. Whether or not Sony takes action to remove these trophies so that it is still possible to get Platinum for Gran Turismo Sport remains to be seen, but I wouldn’t count on it. In other words, trophy hunters should probably make do.
