Rumors have been circulating for months regarding a possible new PlayStation subscription with which Sony – at least that is what the persistent rumors say – wants to react to the Xbox Game Pass. This in turn is reminiscent of the Netflix business model. For a monthly fee, people with such an Xbox Game Pass subscription can play selected games in the full version. Some from launch. The subscription has since become a success story and has given the Xbox brand a boost.
According to a Bloomberg report, Sony is currently preparing to announce the PlayStation subscription. This is planned for next week. The service is said to be in development under the codename Spartacus and will initially feature a number of hits from the last few years.
According to the Bloomberg report, the new PlayStation subscription will combine the two existing PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now memberships. There will probably be different levels that include game catalogs with modern games and classics from older PlayStation eras.
According to documents Bloomberg claims it received last year, the most expensive tier also offers access to extended demos and the ability to stream games over the Internet. The PlayStation subscription should have a decisive difference compared to the Xbox Game Pass. The biggest games are not expected to be available at launch. God of War Ragnarök, for example, will probably not be playable via subscription at launch. The Xbox Game Pass offers access to all games from Microsoft Studios from launch. Some third-party games can also be played right following they are published, such as the recent console version of Tunic.
