Playstation Portal: what we know about Sony’s next console

Officially announced last May, the Playstation Portal, ex-Project Q, was detailed by Sony during Gamescom, which is currently taking place in Cologne (Germany). This new portable device will allow you to play PS5 games thanks to the Remote Play streaming system.

Almost 20 years after the release of the still famous portable Playstation (PSP), and more than 10 years after the PlayStation Vita, Sony is preparing the release of a new portable console. Called Playstation Portal, the product was unveiled last May under the code name Project Q. But the Gamescom video game fair has made it possible to learn more about this device, which is inspired by the Switch in its desire to provide a form of mobility for PS5 players.

When and at what price will it be available?

The main announcement of this Gamescom was in highlighting the price of this device. We thus learn that the PS Portal will be launched at a price of 219.99 euros in France. A significant price for an accessory, but which, we will see later, has real arguments to make. Finally, Sony confirms that its device will be well marketed by the end of the year. An upcoming event, or even the Tokyo Game Show scheduled for September 21, should clarify things.

A remote play device

Another important point, we are not actually talking about a console here, Sony preferring to attribute the name of “remote playback device” to its latest gadget. A fairer notion indeed, since the PlayStation Portal is not an autonomous machine, but will allow you to stream games from your PlayStation 5. Because yes, the PlayStation Portal will be compatible with all the games of the Japanese giant’s home console. . It will use the PS Remote Play service, an application that allows you to play games on your console on a screen other than your TV (smartphone, tablet, computer). Note that it will not be compatible with the PSVR2 headset.

The PlayStation Portal “has an 8-inch HD screen and all the buttons and features of the Dual Sense wireless controller,” said PlayStation boss Jim Ryan. A design that can be compared to that of the Nintendo Switch, with its central screen and two ergonomic controllers on the sides. For comparison, the screen of this “portable PS5” is a little larger than that of the new Nintendo Switch Oled (7 inches). Above all, the screen can display games in 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second.

The use will however be very different since it will be necessary to have a PS5 and leave it in rest mode to be able to play this portable console, via a Wi-Fi connection. A connection which must be good enough in order to be able to stream the game.

What is his interest ?

When it was announced, many voices of gamers were raised on social networks wondering about the usefulness of such a device. The initial idea is indeed to allow playing on a second screen when you cannot access your main television. However, players pointed to the advantage of the Nintendo Switch, allowing you to play anywhere without the need for an internet connection.

Sony argues by pointing out that many gamers often have to share their TV with the rest of their household. Above all, you should know that the PlayStation Portal will allow you to play even away from home. This device integrates the RemotePlay system already used on smartphones and which allows you to stream games… provided you are connected to the internet. A remote WiFi network will therefore make it possible to play, but it will probably be necessary to rely on very high speed to achieve this in good conditions.

Wireless headphones provided

To accompany this streaming device, Sony has unveiled its first-ever PlayStation wireless headphones, to make the sound experience more immersive. Called Pulse Explore, they will be compatible with the PS5 and the PS Portal, and will connect via Bluetooth.
