PlayStation Hacker TheFloW: Inside the $10,000 Bounty and Unreleased Vulnerability

2023-12-31 20:32:13

Recently, PlayStation hacker TheFloW confirmed on LinkedIn that he once once more won a $10,000 bonus from Sony through the HackerOne bug bounty program. This means that the researcher submitted a major vulnerability to Sony, but it is unknown if and when the vulnerability will be made public.

Jailbreaking for PS4 and PS5 has been stuck on the breakthrough of old firmware. Until September this year, TheFloW simply said “Don’t upgrade” in the community, implicitly implying that he had the technical key to jailbreak, and it was probably a kernel vulnerability targeting PS5 or PS4 (or both).

Until this week, TheFloW’s LinkedIn posts confirmed it had important news. The email TheFloW received from the PlayStation Security Team read: “Thank you very much for your report! We have reproduced your findings and have decided to rate this report as high severity and award you $10,000.”

Currently, Sony has no indication that it will disclose this vulnerability chain, but TheFloW has been insisting on disclosing the vulnerability he discovered following getting approval from Sony.
