Playstation 5: what is the new premium DualSense Edge controller really worth?

The new Playstation 5 premium controller, called DualSense Edge, has been available for a few weeks and we had the opportunity to test it.

Announced revolution or superfluous toy? Teased for several months by Playstation, the DualSense Edge controller arrived on the French market at the end of January. A priori, all superlatives apply to this novelty, since it is both the most flexible, the most programmable and above all… the most expensive, with its 240 euros.

CUSTOMIZATION FIRST

However, it remains relatively discreet, at first sight. From a distance, an untrained eye will not necessarily tell the difference with the original Playstation 5 controller. The color ranges are almost the same, with a greater place given to black, especially for the buttons or the touchpad . The choice of a shiny plastic instead of matte for certain black parts did not really convince us.

Once connected to the console, the controller is immediately recognized as an official product (which it is) and customization options are offered. Among the most visible, we can for example mention the reassignment of the keys or the adjustment of the sensitivity of the joysticks. You can also add new triggers on the back, which are held in place by magnets and are very practical in racing or fighting games.

With each modification, even minor, it is possible to create and save a new profile, directly on the controller, which will be usable according to the desired game. Very handy when playing outdoors.

A model intended for pro players

But before emptying your PEL to acquire the DualSense Edge, ask yourself the right questions. The first: do you really need a controller of this level to face your little Sunday game of Fifa 23? The price – prohibitive, we remind you – is indeed due to the very specific positioning of this accessory, which is clearly aimed at professional players. Demanding, the latter also have the annoying habit of wearing out their equipment at high speed by playing ten hours a day. It is therefore for them that Sony has notably decided to create modules de joystick replaceable. A very nice idea, but the cost of the parts (€24.99 each) may, here too, put off the average player.

Its higher weight (regarding 50 grams) is also felt quite quickly and plays a little once morest it, as does its lower autonomy. After a few runs of several hours, it seems much less durable than the basic DualSense. Too bad, because if the premium model exudes manufacturing quality, its price might suggest that it is a perfect product, which is not the case.
