Player Ratings and Performances: Netherlands vs France – UEFA EURO 2024 Qualifiers

2023-10-14 00:16:00

Mike Maignan : 5

He conceded the first goal of his qualifying campaign for anticipating a cross and opening his near post. Too bad because the Milanese had once once more demonstrated his solidity on a strike from Simons (36th) or authoritarian interventions. A scare over a hand fault (45th) and a failed exit (55th) tarnish his record.

In short… Less incandescent.

Jonathan Clauss : 7

He hadn’t played for the French team for 383 days, it didn’t show. Very efficient and determined in each of his interventions, he started his match with an assist for Mbappé. Always so fair in these centers, he posed a constant danger, even offering nice openings or daring raids. Didier Deschamps expects him to be as effective in defense, the weakness of the Netherlands this Friday does not allow us to judge him in a sector where he was used too little.

In short… A breath of fresh air following the failed performances of Koundé and Pavard in September.

Replaced by Malo Gusto (80th), devoured by Hartman on the Dutch goal.

“When we compare Clauss’ performance and the last ones from Pavard or Koundé on the right…”

Ibrahima Konate: 6

He fought a tough duel with Wout Weghorst at the start of the match, which he won hands down. For his return to the selection, he always displays the same serenity in the duels, as if nothing might happen to him even if he is trapped by the last pass on the Batavian goal and he might have been trapped behind his back by Bergwijn (90th).

In short… Mirrored cabinet.

Lucas Hernandez: 6

Drawn in by Weghorst’s call, he forgets Veerman behind (27th). The only oddity in a match that was ultimately quite quiet even at the end where he easily managed the Dutch’s highlight. Serene in the middle, he continues to prove that he is a client for this position in selection.

Theo Hernandez: 5

It’s usually him who bursts the screen but, this time, he had the spotlight stolen by Jonathan Clauss. We rarely saw him combine with Kylian Mbappé but, behind him, he held his own. An evening in the shadows when he is used to the light.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: 7

What a volume of play once more… The midfield octopus once once more laid down the law. Huge since the restart, he is in incredible form. It was he who kept the heads of the Dutch, unable to free themselves from his grip, underwater. It’s quite simple, he was always where he was needed. But he also initiated the offensives. Simply but effectively.

In short… Huge. Again.

Adrien Rabiot: 6

He muzzled Van Dijk on defensive kicks and showed his power in duels. A decisive passer on a beautiful delivery full of spontaneity for Mbappé, he did his part of the job in all dimensions of the game.

In short… Essential.

Antoine Griezmann: 6

A dense first hour of play where he notably delivered a magnificent penultimate pass on the Blues’ opener. When he is available and opens spaces through passing, the French game brightens. This is what he did in Amsterdam before gradually losing influence.

Replaced by Youssouf Fofana (87th).

Kingsley Coman : 5,5

He started the action on goal with a good call and had a very exciting first half hour. Intelligent in his choices, often in the direction of the game, the Munich player tilted the game to his side. But, as is often the case, he lacked lucidity in his crosses or his attempts.

In short… Real Coman.

Replaced by Olivier Giroud (71st)

Kylian Mbappé: 8.5

He hadn’t scored in four matches so Ronald Koeman even took the liberty of teasing him at a press conference. The response was terrible with a royal double. First with a recovery worthy of a real 9 then with a luminous praline under the bar. He didn’t overplay but simply did the right thing and didn’t look like a player with a crisis of confidence or struggling physically. As evidenced by his last shot under the bar without momentum at the entrance to the area (86th).

In short… The boss’s response.

Randal Colonel :

Always on the move but rarely used in dangerous conditions, he had much less influence on the course of events than his teammates in the attack. It’s not for lack of proposing solutions but he didn’t know how to make any difference.

Replaced by Marcus Thuram (80th).

What flaws must the Blues erase to win the Euro?
