What is Phishing?

Phishing is a technique that cybercriminals use to try to obtain personal data through fraud and deception over the Internet or via SMS. Criminals pose as banking institutions and ask victims to follow links or open file attachments and then provide personal information such as account details, credit card numbers or account access data. This gives the perpetrators access to the victims’ data or the opportunity to install malware on their devices. The most common form of phishing takes place via email. The emails contain links to scam websites that look confusingly similar to the original sites. Smishing involves receiving an SMS or WhatsApp message asking you to click a link or install an app. Phishing websites are copies of trustworthy websites. If a victim logs in with their user data, the perpetrators get access to them.

The Federal Criminal Police Office advises: Do not respond to dubious messages that pressure you to enter personal data and put them in the spam folder. If you have provided user data for websites, log in to the account and change your password. If you have disclosed confidential banking information, have your bank accounts, online banking access or credit cards blocked. Further information can be found on the Federal Criminal Police Office’s Crime Prevention homepage, the Internet Watchlist and in every police station.
