Are social media and online dating platforms changing the way we choose our partners? A new study from the Ethophilia Research Foundation raises this question, revealing that these digital tools are causing significant confusion among young adults when it comes to making romantic choices.

Young adults, exposed to a wide range of potential partners through social media, are feeling increasing uncertainty in their romantic decisions. More than half of those surveyed say they are confused, with women being the most concerned.

The abundance of dating apps and the ease of retouching photos online contribute to a distortion of the reality of available candidates. This overexposure generates unrealistic perceptions and complicates the process of selecting partners.

Chayan Munshidirector of the Foundation of Research Ethophilia explains that partner choice is influenced by many social factors, including appearance and situation financial. The impact of social media creates unrealistic expectations, exacerbating young adults’ confusion.

The foundation conducted an observational study followed by questionnaires among young Indian adults aged 18 to 30. Preliminary results show that perceptions of partner availability distort judgments, even within established relationships.

The questions asked focused on partner selection criteria and the tendency to seek new relationships despite being in a stable relationship. The results suggest that impulsivity and decreased in-person social interactions create complications in relationship management.

Munshi believes the research could shed light on the evolution of human mate selection strategies. The pleasure and adrenaline rush of relationships now seem to trump long-term stability among younger generations.

This shift in social norms for mate choice could have a significant impact on human behavior and evolutionary mating strategies, Munshi says. Indeed, it could transform the fundamental protocols of these strategies in the long term.
