Planes were unable to land at Silvio Pettirossi Airport due to thick fog

Asuncion, IP Agency.- During the early hours of Tuesday morning, several flights were unable to land at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport due to thick fog that significantly reduced visibility. This meteorological phenomenon seriously affected air operations, causing considerable diversions and delays.

Fog banks at airports present a significant challenge for airlines as they impair visibility of the runway and obstacles, complicating aircraft takeoff, landing and taxiing operations. Fog reduces visibility to levels that prevent pilots from seeing enough to land safely.

Flight route from Buenos Aires, which landed in Resistencia and then returned to the capital of Argentina.

In order to operate safely, a minimum visibility of 700 metres is required. At the time of the cancellation of flights this morning, visibility at the airport was only 600 metres.

Several international flights were diverted due to these conditions. An Aerolíneas Argentinas flight from Buenos Aires was diverted to Resistencia Airport, where they attempted to land once more. As the fog continued, the plane returned to Buenos Aires.

Another Avianca flight from Bogotá was diverted to Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. Copa Airlines flights from Panama and Air Europa from Madrid were also diverted to the same airport. Meanwhile, a LATAM Airlines flight from Lima was diverted to Campo Grande International Airport in Brazil.

The flight planning team makes crucial decisions in these cases, such as loading additional fuel to allow aircraft to fly over an airport affected by fog or diverting the flight to another airport if conditions do not improve.

The director of Meteorology and Hydrology of the National Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DINAC), Eduardo Mingo, informed our media that the fog phenomenon is expected to persist until approximately 10:00 a.m. this morning.
