A near tragedy was averted at New York JFK Airport with the collision of five aircraft who were at the same time on the same runway following a communication error.
THE Swiss Air flight bound for Zürich was cleared to take off on 17 April and the pilot began the take-off procedure with the aircraft developing high speed on the runway but luckily managed to brake when he noticed other four planes.
Swiss Air has rewarded the quick reflexes of its staff in canceling take-off and averting a potential tragedy at the New York airport.
“Due to the extensive experience and quick reaction of our crew, a potentially dangerous situation was quickly de-escalated,” Swiss Air said in a statement.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, according to the New York Post.
The near miss at JFK happened just one day before another incident where two other aircraft they almost collided at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, just outside Washington, DC.
As in the New York incident, two aircraft at the Virginia airport were cleared to take off on the same runway at the same time, according to the FAA.
It took regarding 30 seconds for air traffic controllers to realize the mistake, desperately calling for the JetBlue and Southwest Airlines planes to stop before they collided.
