Plan B acclaimed, even Ecolo no longer opposes the extension of the two nuclear reactors: “We will not sign a blank check with Engie”

The minister’s note talks regarding extending two reactors for another 10 years.

The information leaked Wednesday evening. In the note from the Minister of Energy, it is planned to seriously examine the extension of nuclear power for ten years. After hammering home the need to follow plan A, planning to phase out nuclear power in 2025, Tinne Van der Straeten (Groen) is seriously considering following plan B. This plans to keep the two youngest nuclear reactors in operation, namely Doel 4 and Tihange 3 until 2035.

The green parties, the last who still hesitated to extend nuclear power, seem to have changed their minds, which delighted many deputies in the House on Thursday. “It’s a decision to be made in a more global scheme”, nuanced Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, who regrets that the debate is reduced to an extension of nuclear power. The note provides for a series of elements aimed at achieving energy independence which will only be possible with a transition, a transition in which nuclear power is still present.
