Plague outbreak in Thessaly: In Larissa the Minister of Development, emergency meeting – 2024-07-19 07:44:31

Extraordinary meeting for cases of plague in Thessalyis taking place today in Larissa under the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Costa Ciara.

Consecutive meetings will be held with the governor of Thessaly, Dimitris Kouretas, and representatives of producers, following the new case of plague of small ruminants, which was detected in a sheep and goat farm in the area of ​​the Larissa Region and in particular in the Municipal Unit of Domenikos.

Mr. Tsiaras will be accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, Christos Kella, the General Secretary of Rural Development and Food, George Stratakos, and officials. They will have successive meetings with the Regional Governor and representatives of producers, in order to achieve the best possible coordination and the immediate implementation of measures to eradicate the disease.

The regional governor of Thessaly, Dimitris Kouretas, sent a letter to the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Konstantinos Tsiaras, requesting that Thessaly be declared a state of emergency.

The National Center for Disease Control and the National Group of Experts of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food as well as the Local Center for Disease Control to deal with the disease in P.E. Larissa, have been activated since 11/07/2024, as soon as the first case appeared in Kalambaka, as provided for in article 7 of the Emergency Response Plan to combat the diseases of Annex I of the p.d. 138/1995 (A’88) (Decision 1747/386028/14.12.2023 GOVERNMENT B΄ 7121 18.12.2023) and the relevant directions have been immediately given to the Local Center for Disease Control.

The necessary measures provided for in the above plan as well as the existing EU legislation (Delegating Regulation (EU) 687/2020) are the following:

  • Measures in the contaminated farm (killing and sanitary burial of the animals).
  • Measures in the Larissa Regional Unit.
  • Demarcation of Protection and Surveillance Zones around infected breeding.
  • Measures in the above zones.
  • Conducting epidemiological research.

It is emphasized, finally, that the plague virus of small ruminants is not transmitted to humans and has nothing to do with public health.
