Plague Outbreak in Matoka Village Raises Concern: Latest Updates and Precautionary Measures

The Matoka village, located in the heart of the Manandriana district in Madagascar, was marked by sad news. A mother and her son died within hours, plunging the community into concern. Local health authorities have raised suspicions of plague.

On the evening of Tuesday, October 3, a 43-year-old mother took her last breath at her home in Matoka, in the district of Manandriana (region of Amoron’i Mania – center of Madagascar). According to Madagascar Express, the forty-year-old had suffered from acute diarrhea, fever and heartburn since the end of September. The next morning, her 25-year-old son passed away at the area’s Basic Health Center, with similar symptoms, but in addition to buboes, since October 1.

Local health authorities quickly raised the possibility of epidemic of over. The post-mortem test carried out on the son also turned out to be positive, according to the media. However, the result of the test carried out on the mother was negative, and samples had to be sent to the Pasteur Institute for confirmation.

Bodies buried in a pit

The deceased have already been buried in a grave, in accordance with sanitary measures, because it is prohibited to bury deceased people from the over in family graves. This precaution is important because the agent responsible for over can survive for several years in a grave.

Local health authorities clarified that no removals or exhumations took place before these deaths, and no proliferation of rats or fleas was reported. The area has also never experienced a case of over previously. Despite this, precautionary measures have been put in place to prevent the spread of the disease.
