Plague in Corinth: The emergency measures decided upon 2024-07-30 03:21:48

As stated by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Rural Development, George Stratakos, who presided over the meeting, “after the detection of the case, the main measures taken are the killing of all the animals of the unit, followed by landfilling, disinfection and closing down that particular facility for as long as necessary to make sure it no longer has infectious power.”

“Of course”, he continued, “what we must mention is that for the measures to be successful, there must be very good cooperation of the breeders who are within the two protection and surveillance zones, around the unit where the case was detected, with the veterinary services of the Peloponnese Region”.

For his part, the regional governor of Peloponnese, Dimitris Ptochos, said in his statements that “our reaction was immediate, with the aim of limiting and taking the necessary measures” and added: “The broad meeting that took place also shows the degree of readiness of all involved. We follow the protocol, we have confidence in our services and it would be good to repeat that it is not transmitted to humans”.

Speaking to ERT, the Deputy Minister of Rural Development, Christos Kellas, emphasized that all the measures foreseen to deal with the crisis will be taken to limit the spread of the disease. As he explained, the protocol envisages two zones: a protection zone of 3 kilometers in diameter and a surveillance zone of 10 kilometers. Unfortunately, the prefecture of Achaia, Western Greece, is also in this second protection zone. For this purpose, a meeting is underway with all the co-competent bodies.

“The plague of small rodents is zoonotic, there is no transmission to humans, but only from lamb goats to lamb goats, nor to other animals, domestic or pets,” noted Mr. Kellas, emphasizing that there is no fear for the consumer public.

He made it clear that there is no problem with amnoerfie products. As for milk, he said it is perfectly safe with pasteurization for 15 seconds at a slightly higher temperature of 72 degrees. As for the meat, he noted that the situation is a bit more complicated as it requires heat treatment before it can be used.
