Placebo Live in Chile: A Cell Phone-Free Concert Experience

A packed Arena (around 14 thousand people) received Placebo 10 years since his last visit to Chile. The band of Brian Molko y Stefan Olsdal arrived in the country with a disruptive proposal: a show without the radio hits that made them ambassadors of alternative music at the end of the last millennium, and that even led them to be received at La Moneda in 2014 by the late president Sebastián Piñera.

The recital, in turn, added another difficulty to the audience of 2024. Prior to the show, the band expressly requested do not use cell phones during the concertfirst through a message on the screen and then through the speakers.

Without hits and without cameras, there is a party: Placebo returned to Chile 10 years later and raged with cell phones

“Don’t spend the concert recording. This makes the presentation much more difficult, it is more difficult to connect with you and effectively communicate the emotions of our songs.”, they pointed out minutes before starting, and the truth is that the vast majority respected the decalogue. At least until the last songs.

In 1 hour and 50 minutes, the British band avoided world hits like “Every You Every Me”, “Pure Morning”, “This Picture” y “Special Need”among others, to focus on less widespread themes in their catalog and, especially, on “Never Let Me Go” (2022)an album that last year had them playing in Europe with quite a few controversies.

In Chile, Molko showed his usual temperament. Within minutes of starting, he had no qualms about rebuking a “white hat” fan who insisted on recording Placebo songs. “That’s it, that’s it!”he shouted energetically from the stage, while changing one of the more than 10 guitars intended just for him.

The vocalist’s dialogues with his technical team were a constant: In true Luis Miguel style, Molko asked for return and volume adjustments in the middle or beginning of almost every song, and even gestured to one of his bodyguards when something in the first rows unfocused him and forced him to get off. “My sister is not feeling well. She is better now,” he said.

“Forever Chemicals”, “Beautiful James”, “Scene of the Crime”, “Hugz”, “Happy Birthday in the Sky” y “Bionic”performed by 6 musicians on stage, marked the first part of the show that this time, thanks to the “Placebo Decalogue”, could be seen without the usual cell phone barrier. The public’s response, for its part, was compromised. Not only did they follow the band’s rules, but they also celebrated new pieces.

The white piano installed for “Too Many Friends” marked the end of the show, which hid some “gifts” for its Chilean fans. Between them, “For What It’s Worth”, “Slave to the Wage”, “Song to Say Goodbye”, “The Bitter End” e “Infra-red”. A section where a good part of the audience could no longer contain their desire to record and ended up giving in to temptation.

In the closing, and in his only return to the stage, “Taste In Men” y “Fix Yourself” They drew the farewell. The last of the stellar segment was “Running Up That Hill”his Kate Bush cover from 2003, almost as if to make it clear that Placebo detected the elixir of the song long before “Stranger Things” and the 2012 London Olympics

For this Tuesday, the group’s second presentation is scheduled at Movistar Arena. There are still tickets available.
