AA / Tell Abyad / Esref Musa

Duhayye al-Khalil, a mother whose child was kidnapped six years ago by the US-backed PKK/YPG terrorist organization in the Tell Abyad district of the northeastern Raqqa province from Syria, hopes to see his child once more before closing his eyes.

The PKK/YPG terrorist organization continues to kidnap children and forcibly recruit them in the areas it occupies in Syria.

The US-backed PKK/YPG terrorist organization, which kidnaps and detains children and takes them to camps for armed training, does not allow these children to communicate with their families.

Alaa al-Khalil, who was kidnapped in 2017 at the age of 14 during the PKK/YPG occupation of Tell Abyad, is one of the organization’s victims.

Alaa’s mother, Duhayye al-Khalil, recounted her experience to Anadolu correspondent.

She said her son was kidnapped by the organization on his way to school in Tell Abyad.

“He went to school. He didn’t come back. I called a lot, they (PKK/YPG) lied and said he wasn’t with them. 12 days following the kidnapping my son, his father died of grief,” she said.

She doesn’t know if her son is alive or not. “He was my youngest son, he was very kind. For 6 years, no one has seen him and we have not received the slightest news from anyone. I am sick because of this situation.”

– “Your son is in the mountains. Forget him.”

Mother Halil said she started having vision problems because she was constantly crying.

“Believe it or not, it’s been six years since we cooked meat on a holiday. There are two pieces of his clothes left. He really liked sweets, he was very fond of them. I think so much to him that I forgot that I had another son.”

Claiming that she once more questioned the terrorists gathered near her house regarding her son’s whereregardings following the start of Turkey’s Operation Peace Spring in October 2019, Halil said: “They told me: ‘We took him, your son is in the mountains. Forget him.’

Calling on international human rights organizations, the mother declared: “I want my son. If he is alive, I want him. If he is dead, I want news of him. I want to see my son before turning a blind eye to the world.”

– International organizations also document the PKK/YPG practice of forcibly recruiting children

Virginia Gamba, the special representative of United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres on “children in armed conflict”, met Ferhat Abdi Sahin, code name “Mazlum Abdi”, one of the leaders of the PKK/YPG , at the UN office in Geneva on June 29, 2019 and officially signed the action plan prepared “for the organization to renounce child combatants”. Türkiye had sent a note of protest to the UN.

In a report released on January 16, 2020, the United Nations Human Rights Council shared findings that PKK/YPG terrorists were using children as “combatants” in Syria.

The use of children as combatants by the PKK/YPG terrorist organization was also on the agenda of the “2020 Human Trafficking Report” published by the US Department of State on June 26, 2020.

The report states that “the YPG continued to forcibly recruit and use girls and boys as young as 12 from refugee camps in northwest Syria.”

In the “Annual Children in Armed Conflict” report prepared by the UN for the period January-December 2022, it is indicated that the terrorist organization PKK and its Syrian extensions SDF and YPG used more than 1,200 children as “soldiers” in 2022.

The report states that the SDF, the Syrian branch of the PKK, recruited 637 children and that 633 children were recruited by the PKK/YPG and SDF affiliates.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whose views were included in the report, said: “I am extremely concerned regarding the use of children as soldiers by the HPG/PKK. I call on them to stop use children as soldiers and for other purposes and to release all children in their ranks.”
