News culture Pixel War: Kameto, Zerator… the whole world clashes on Reddit in a crazy Pixel War!
In 2017, on April 1st, a funny experiment started on Reddit. From a blank page, participants might place a pixel and create canvases collaboratively. Five years later and without warning, the initiative has made a comeback, and has taken on a whole new dimension!
It’s certain the R/Place subreddit, created by Josh Wardlethe creator of Wordle, as the event unfolds. Since April 1, the page has made a comeback and, every 5 minutes, registered people can place a pixel on a gigantic canvas. A collaborative and social project, which quickly transformed into a peaceful confrontation between communities and country.
A real Pixel War on Reddit
Each group or nationality try to organize yourself to create patternsinvade those of others, and thus modify the general aspect of the creation, which already reached 2000×2000 pixels at the end of the third day. On the French side, a large tricolor flag began to appear, then an Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame (later modified by the Spanish community to appear burning), and many other images. The R/Place then invaded social networks, in particular thanks to the many French-speaking streamers who took hold of the phenomenon. When announcing the return of the idea, Alex Le, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Special Projects at Reddit, said:
We learned from the original experience that people online are naturally collaborative, that redditors are more creative than us, and that Reddit is a place where great things are born. “April Fool’s Day on Reddit has always inspired the way we create new features on the platform.
From Robin inspiring our real-time chat product, to Circle of Trust inspiring real-time comments and upvotes, April Fool’s Day gives Reddit a time to test the infrastructure at scale and try new things. and staggered. We can’t wait to see what collaboration will take place on r/place this year and to learn how we can improve our platform.
French streamers are mobilizing
Squeezie, Hugo Decrypte, SEB, Inoxtag or even Zerator have largely relayed and participated, even if it is Kameto who has invested the most, going with his community to cover the creations of several American streamers who did not fail to reply. However, the experiment will soon come to an end since the canvas will become inaccessible from 4 p.m. this Monday. The image will thus be immortalized, leaving great memories to the participants.
It remains to be seen whether the experience will return in the next few years, or whether the idea will remain there following two editions. Until then, you can follow live the evolution of creation by following the link at the bottom of the page. As these lines are written, the French corner, the most imposing, is still evolving, and we can see Zelda’s Triforce, the fight between Anakin Obi-Wan, or the Zevent logo. Note that during the night, the English community has covered the French flag with a buttock, quickly erased by the French community, which is in the process of recreating the Arc de Triomphe
