The first game of the season between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals was won by Sidney Crosby and his gang.
Friday night, at Capital One Arena, the “Pens” blanked their Metropolitan division rivals 4-0.
It was Evgeni Malkin who hosted the show by participating in all of his team’s goals. The Russian scored his team’s first goal and provided assists on Crosby’s two successes and that of Reilly Smith.
It was the 29th time Malkin had at least four points in a National League regular season game. On the goal of the hero of the day, defender Erik Karlsson collected an assist. It was his first point in a Penguins uniform.
Furthermore, Crosby’s two goals were scored on the power play. The “Caps” received five penalties and were unable to take advantage of the five chances they got to play with one more skater.
Pittsburgh goaltender Tristan Jarry faced 19 shots and signed his 14th career shutout. At the other end of the ice, Charlie Lindgren was challenged 35 times.
