LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Gunmen opened fire on a school bus in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province on Thursday, killing two children and wounding six others, according to police and authorities.

Authorities explained that the injured driver of the vehicle appeared to be the target of the attack. “Our preliminary investigation indicates that the driver had a feud with someone,” local police officer Mohammad Shakil said, without providing further details.

Police are still investigating who was behind the attack, and no one immediately claimed responsibility.

Ghias Gull, the police chief of Attock district, where the shooting occurred, said the dead and injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Interior Minister Mohsoin Naqvi condemned the attack and ordered the best treatment for the injured.

Attock is a region in Punjab province, but not far from the country’s restive northwest.

Pakistan has seen an increase in insurgent attacks in recent years, particularly in its northwest along its border with Afghanistan. In 2014, Pakistani insurgents launched their deadliest attack on an army-run school in the northwestern city of Peshawar, killing 147 people, including 132 children.
