PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) together with strategic partner Nippon Yusen Kaisha Group (NYK) opened up about preparations to build a fleet and supporting infrastructure for the carbon transportation business at the Gastech 2024 world forum in Texas, United States.

PIS CEO Yoki Firnandi in his statement in Jakarta, Wednesday, said that PIS is increasingly confident in running the carbon transportation business, especially in the carbon capture and storage business or carbon capture and storage carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCS/CCUS).

According to him, PIS is currently preparing the fleet and terminals needed for the CCS/CCUS business. “Like it or not, we have to move quickly to anticipate the need for CCS in the future. At the same time, we have to invest to face current and future energy needs. An example of this is through our collaboration with NYK in developing CCS transportation in Indonesia ,” said Yoki.

In early 2024, the government issued Presidential Decree no. 14 of 2024 concerning the Implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage Activities.

This presidential decree is an important milestone as well as a green light for PIS in pursuing Pertamina’s commitment to achieving net zero emission in 2060. At the same time, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is committed to reducing emissions from the shipping industry.

Yoki said that one of the things PIS is preparing through its collaboration with NYK is investment in LCO2 carrier vessels (liquid carbon dioxide) and receiving terminal, which is the main infrastructure in developing the CCS/CCUS business.

On the same occasion, NYK Group Europe and Norway Managing Director Anders Lepsoe said that for PIS and NYK, CCS was an extraordinary opportunity. “Especially when you look at the volume of CO2 that can be captured over time to ensure a smooth transition, as well as a green transition for a better society,” he said.

Anders added that the CCS business has enormous potential. “The key is to understand the technology, understand the transport of CO2 as a cargo, understand the shipping industry, regulations and others where both we and PIS already have expertise in this area, so that CCS can be an opportunity for us to be a contributor in the energy transition,” he said .

Yoki continued that green business or sustainable business has always been PIS’ main focus in supporting the government’s commitment to achieving net zero emission in 2060.

In order to realize this commitment, PIS targets reducing 30% of total carbon emissions in company operations by the end of 2030.

PIS has carried out rapid implementation of green transformation, such as rejuvenating the fleet with ships that are more environmentally friendly and use alternative fuels such as dual-fuel and biodiesel.

PIS also plans to continue modernizing its fleet with more energy efficient features, expanding the use of alternative fuels, and making investments to be ready to become part of the CCS/CCUS business suite.

“Based on our discussions with NYK regarding CCS, especially regarding transportation, it is not easy to do, it is much more complex. However, what we are doing with NYK will answer all existing challenges. At the same time, this step will provide certainty for the government, actors industry, and emitters, that we are ready to be part of the value chain that serves CCS shipping needs, especially in carbon shipments across countries and within regions,” explained Yoki.
