the essential Member of the Omicron family, the new “Pirola” variant of Covid-19 worries health authorities. It might spread more quickly than the others and causes unprecedented symptoms in some people for a Covid-19 infection.
Detected for the first time on August 31 in France, the new “Pirola” variant, or BA.2.86 by its scientific name, is the subject of particular surveillance. For good reason, it is described by the president of the Committee for Monitoring and Anticipation of Health Risks (Covars) as having a “larger number of mutations”. It is also more “likely to scale more significantly and spread more easily.”

“Pirola” variant of Covid-19: why the first data are rather “reassuring” on this new strain
The WHO classifies “Pirola” in the category of variants under surveillance because of its large number of mutations, particularly in its Spike gene. It is this protein that allows the virus to enter cells.
Symptoms that appear on the skin
People affected by this variant can develop classic symptoms of Covid-19 such as a flu-like illness, fever, loss of smell, diarrhea, headaches or even a severe cold as noted L’Express. However, “Pirola” has the particularity of being able to cause eye irritation and a rash on the face according to doctor Johannes Uys, interviewed by the Daily Express.
This variant also stands out for its strong asymptomaticity. This makes its detection more complicated and promotes its transmission. It is “not serious enough” to require hospitalization but Dr Nighat Arif notes that patients are sometimes “broken” by fatigue.
