The Pittsburgh Pirates have significantly strengthened their bullpen by signing veteran left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza to a one-year major league contract worth $1.15 million. To accommodate this move, the team designated infielder Alika Williams for assignment.
Mayza’s Recent Performance
Tim Mayza, a 33-year-old with over a decade of major league experience, enjoyed a successful tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays from 2021 to 2023. During this period, he demonstrated impressive pitching prowess, posting a remarkable 2.67 ERA while striking out nearly 25% of opposing batters over 155 innings. Mayza’s ability to induce ground balls, with a 58-59% rate across those three seasons, proved crucial to his effectiveness.

Tim,welcome to Pittsburgh! What drew you to the Pirates?
“I’m very excited to be joining the Pirates organization. I beleive they have a bright future ahead, and I’m eager to contribute to their success. The manager and the coaching staff have a great reputation, and I’m looking forward to working with them.” – Tim Mayza
Yoru performance dipped a bit last season, culminating in your designation for assignment. What happened, and how have you addressed those challenges?
“I’ll be honest, last year was a bit of a struggle.I faced some mechanical issues and wasn’t able to throw my pitches consistently. I spent the offseason working with my pitching coach to iron out those kinks and I feel really good about where my mechanics are now. I’m confident that I can return to my previous form.”
Your sinker-slider combination has always been effective. Did you focus on anything specific with those pitches during the offseason?
“Absolutely. I worked hard on refining my grip and release point for both pitches.I want to make sure that my sinker is inducing those ground balls consistently, and my slider is breaking sharply. I feel like those two pitches are my bread and butter, and I want to make sure they are as sharp as possible.”
The Pirates have added several veteran arms to the bullpen this offseason. How do you see yourself fitting into the mix?
“I’m excited to be part of a strong bullpen. Competition is always a good thing, and it will push us all to be better. I’m confident that I can contribute to this team’s success.”
Looking ahead, what are your personal goals for the 2025 season?
“My goal is to be a reliable and effective reliever for this team. I want to help us win games and make a deep playoff run. I’m excited about the future here in Pittsburgh.”
The addition of Tim Mayza brings valuable experience and proven pitching prowess to the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen. With a strong focus on generating ground balls, Mayza is expected to be a key contributor as the Pirates strive for success in the upcoming season.
Pirates Sign Veteran Lefty Tim Mayza
The Pittsburgh Pirates have added veteran left-handed relief pitcher Aaron Mayza to their bullpen, signing him to a major league contract. This move comes as the team seeks to solidify its pitching depth for the upcoming season.
Mayza, known for his sinker-slider combination, experienced a resurgence in velocity late last season with the New York Yankees. His fastball, which averaged 93-94 MPH during his peak seasons with the Toronto blue Jays, increased to around 93.5 MPH in his final two months with the Yankees. While this velocity boost didn’t translate into a significant jump in strikeouts, Mayza regained his ability to induce ground balls, limiting opponents to a groundball rate of 55.4% during his time in New York.
Mayza’s Experience and Potential
With over five years of service time, mayza is ineligible to be optioned to the minor leagues without his consent. This indicates that the Pirates fully anticipate him being a part of their opening day bullpen. The signing of Mayza comes on the heels of the Pirates’ agreement with another former Yankee,Caleb Ferguson, also a left-handed reliever. The team’s current 40-man roster features just two other left-handed pitchers: Joey Wentz, a long man who is also out of minor league options, and fellow reliever Mayza.
A Commitment to Pitching Depth
The Pirates’ moves to bolster their bullpen suggest a commitment to building a strong pitching staff for the upcoming season. The addition of experienced relievers like Mayza and Ferguson provides valuable depth and stability to the back end of the bullpen.
