Sschlager singer Lolita (whose birth name was Edith Zuser) from St. Pölten-Spratzern was a favorite of the 1960s and even stormed the American and Japanese hit parades. In Lilienfeld she opened the Hotel Lolita, which existed until 1980 and was demolished in 2020.
Edith Zuser was born on January 17, 1931 in the Spratzern district of St. Pölten. As a married woman, her name was Einzinger, and she was a kindergarten teacher and clerk.
She became really famous in the 1960s under her stage name “Lolita”. With “Seemann” she landed her biggest hit, with which Lolita even stormed the American and Japanese charts.
Edith Zuser learned to sing from her mother, who also had a beautiful mezzo-soprano. In 1954, she caused a sensation for the first time with an “Ave Maria” sung in St. Pölten Cathedral. Two years later, Zuser got a job as a background singer in Vienna, and in 1957 she finally made her breakthrough with “Weißer Holunder”.
She received a record deal and landed in second place in the German hit parade in 1957 with “Derweißen Mond in Maratonga”. It was not until 1958 that she was given the stage name “Lolita”. As such, she achieved her greatest chart success with “Seemann, dein Heimat ist das Meer”.
In later years, Lolita turned to folk music and also hosted on television. Lolita died in Großgmain near Salzburg in 2010. She sold 20 million records over the course of her career.
