The Álvaro Cunqueiro Hospital (Vigo) has recently carried out a surgical procedure with which it has succeeded, for the first time in Europe, in replacing two heart valves in a patient with heart failure. It has done so specifically percutaneous, without the need for an ‘open heart’ operation. The success they have reaped in the Galician center will allow the use of this technological technique in other diseases once they have developed it in a robust way, according to what they point out from Vigo.
Rodrigo Estevezcardiologist at Álvaro Cunqueiro, affirms that during the last 15 years there has been a “very important” evolution of the transcatheter techniques. It is a technology that allows pulmonary and aortic valves, as explained by the specialist. “Now, what is modern or innovative is the tricuspid valve treatment”, points out Estévez, adding that it is a technique that is in a “development” phase. In addition, from the center itself they point out that, with the development of this technology, tricuspid valves might be “more accessible” to treat other diseases due to their “quick” recovery.
“It is possible that in the future, with the evolution of this technology, we can do more transcatheter procedures with better results,” says Estévez. And one of the pathologies in which its use can be applied is, according to this doctor, in the tricuspid regurgitation. A disease that currently does not have a “very good surgical solution” and that opens the door to a possible treatment. “In the transcatheter field, a very important range opens up to try to solve a pathology that can greatly affect patients from the point of view of symptoms, and that until now had no easy solution. The development of these new valves, which can be implanted in a minimally invasive way, can be a very good alternative for this type of patient”, argues Estévez.
Great advance for Cardiology in Spain
This milestone means that the specialty in Spain has not only taken a leap in quality, but has ‘dared’ to lead the way for its European counterparts. It means, as Estévez points out, a “demonstration” that in Spain this type of state-of-the-art procedures can also be performed. “Hospitals in Spain, in the field of Cardiology, have reached a very high level and may be prepared to carry out pioneering processes in the interventional cardiology”, he emphasizes.
The hospital from Vigo, for its part, has managed through this event to ‘place’ itself in the highest echelon of the specialty at a European level. “We participate in multiple studies and we have access to certain technology that not everyone can access, because the very industry that develops them leaves it to the leading hospitals and those with more capacity in this type of procedure”, concludes Estevez.
