Pink month, prevention and awareness to avoid paralysis

The “Valkyries” group of Regina is one of the many institutions that work on breast cancer prevention in the region.

At the initiative of the World Health Organization, Breast Cancer Month is celebrated worldwide during October with the aim of raising awareness and promoting more and more women access to controls, diagnoses and effective treatments.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and continues to be the leading cause of death for them worldwide. In Argentina, Around 21,000 new cases are detected per year and around 5,800 women die.

This disease cannot be prevented absolutely. The important thing is early detection, annual mammography following age 40. And 10 years before if you have a direct family member who has suffered from the disease.

Karina Cabrera, DIGO expert.

Karina Cabrera Langa has long belonged to the group “Valkirias Rosas” of Villa Regina, she is a presenter and recently retired following several years as a teacher specializing in disabilities. She leads in I SAYto the app of BLACK RIVER the “A Pink Road” space. There he proposes weekly testimonies, ideas, recommendations and information related to the topic.

When they tell you that you have cancer, your body paralyzes. You pause emotions, dreams and projects. The central thing is to accompany us so that this paralysis becomes a fight.

While the disease was going on, Karina contacted this group of women who went through or are going through breast cancer and organized themselves to contain and accompany each other. In addition, they practice group sports that provide benefits for their physical and emotional recovery. “We are women who want to offer the clear message that there is life following this disease is diagnosed,” she says.

“We feel like we speak the same language and go through the same situation.”. Not only do we become aware, but we share life. It is essential not to close yourself off. Being in contact with people who are experiencing the same thing is fundamental and revitalizing,” says Karina.

“When they tell you that you have cancer, your body paralyzes. With that feeling you pause emotions, dreams and projects. I think the important thing is to accompany us so that this paralysis is transformed into struggle, optimism and hope. Life is a super valuable path and in “Valkirias” we face together that challenge of improvement and perseverance,” she says.

Prevention is the key:

Mammography can detect breast cancer when the nodule is not yet palpable or is minimally palpable. In these cases it is possible to resort to less aggressive treatments than those performed when the cancer is more advanced.

When cancer causes symptoms and breast changes detectable on physical examination, nipple retraction, changes in skin texture and color, pruritus, or scaly lesions on the nipple may be observed.

21 mil
cases of breast cancer are diagnosed per year in Argentina.

It is recommended that all women ages 50 to 69 have at least one mammogram every two years along with a physical examination of the breasts by a health professional. Both women under 50 and those over 69 should consult with their doctor regarding whether or not to have a mammogram.

The “Valkirias Rosas” group carries out sports activities to exercise the upper limbs.

When faced with a mammogram with an image suspicious of cancer or a physical examination that detects a visible and/or palpable lesion in the breast, A biopsy must be performed to define the treatment.

Karina took this health situation and decided to transform it into activism and awareness. “In cancer I learned that early detection is essential. It is crucial to convey the message that medical studies should not be postponed. There are no excuses, time for your health has to be there. I feel that things don’t happen for a reason, but for something,” she says.
