At the airfield in Höfen in the Ausserfern region of Tyrol, a glider pilot apparently crashed shortly following taking off with a cable winch, the so-called “wind start”, for reasons that have not yet been clarified. The pilot was killed, said a police spokeswoman for the APA. The exact identity of the victim was initially unclear, as was the cause of the crash. Investigations into this were ongoing.
Any help came too late for the pilot, he died on the spot. According to the executive, the plane suddenly tipped sideways immediately following take-off, then crashed vertically and hit the ground.
The Air Accident Commission was turned on. The airfield is to be closed over the weekend and the situation on site evaluated, said Klaus Hohenauer from the state’s aviation authority on the online edition of the “Tiroler Tageszeitung”.
At the end of July last year, a small plane crashed on the roof of a residential building not far from the crash site. This was followed by a brief discussion regarding, among other things, additional security measures at the airfield.
