Pierre Stassart, former Alderman of Public Instruction in Liège, sentenced for illegal taking of interests

On December 14, 2021, the Liège Criminal Court considered that the physicist had favored the appointment of his “long sentimental relationship” within the high school of the City of Liège (HEL). Pierre Stassart had appealed the decision.

On Wednesday morning, the Liège Court of Appeal confirmed the sentence pronounced at first instance: one year in prison with total suspension and a fine of 16,000 €.

On the other hand, the Court of Appeal spared him the ban on working in the public sector demanded by the Advocate General, Séverine Masson.

The Court of Cassation can still be seized if the lawyers of the interested party, Mes Adrien Masset and Jean Bourtembourg, considered that the judgment of the Court of Appeal did not respect the law. “The time limit for appeal in Cassation is 15 days and it is, itself, suspensive”, specifies Me Masset.

Remember that the Court of Cassation no longer examines the merits of the file but the form.
