The Museum of Jewish Art and History presents the first exhibition devoted to Pierre Dac (1893-1975), comedian, songwriter and actor. More than 250 documents from the family archives, excerpts from films, television and radio programs, comic duets, parodies, and interviews… shed light on the personal journey and work of this master of the absurd, who presided over the birth of the contemporary humor. The INA preserves treasures of eccentricity, exceptionally loaned for the exhibition.

The king of goofs

From the 1930s to the mid-1970s, the imagination and inventiveness of Pierre Dac nourished learned and popular French culture with an extraordinary humorous arsenal that the exhibition makes rediscover: the schmilblick, the biglotron, Bonsissers de loin , Signed Furax, the Treasure Race…The exhibition highlights the musical and literary creativity of Pierre Dac, his sources, the role of parody and satire, his very diverse modes of expression. The one who had programmed himself as “the king of crazy people” used all the media to make the French laugh, cinema, radio and television, while remaining attached to cabaret and theater. The exhibition also evokes his traveling companions: Francis Blanche, Jean Yanne, René Goscinny…Finally, it replaces the work of Pierre Dac among those of the masters of the absurd, Beckett, Ionesco, Dubillard and recalls that he consecrated his last years writing his “Thoughts”.

The exhibition also addresses the resonances of his Jewishness in his career as well as his choices as a citizen, his political and militant life: resistance from the first hour, Pierre Dac joined Free France in 1943, and at the microphone of Radio London is addressed to the French, The French talk to the French.
