Pierrakakis: “Greece is above the EU average in the digitization of public services in businesses” – 2024-07-10 18:05:36

In the course of major interventions in the digital image of the country and to the absolutely necessary interconnection of the development of digitization in the public sector to date with the need to double the number of professionals with IT skills, the Minister of Education, Religion and Sports refers, with his post on social media,Kyriakos Pierrakakis.

The minister emphasizes that this goal will be achieved with special actions at school and in education in general and clarifies that this is something that is already being launched by the Ministry of Education, Religion and Sports.

“Great leaps are absolutely possible to take place” concludes Mr. Pierrakakis and declares: “This is how the country changes, this is how problems are solved. This is what we are doing now at the Ministry of Education. One step at a time, one solution each day. Without delays and delays, with hard work and a system we change things”.

The entire post of Mr. Pierrakakis is as follows:

“In 2019 we set the ambitious goal of digital convergence with Europe. The figures announced a few days ago for 2023 show that not only did we succeed in the field of public services but also in several other areas we began to surpass the European average!

In the digitization of public services for businesses, the index for Greece is at 86.2, when in Europe it is 85.4. The digitization of public services increased exponentially in the four-year period 2019-2023, with an annual progress of 17% from 2022 to 2023. At the same time, the deployment of fiber optic connectivity infrastructure stands at 98% (European average 89.3%).

We started very low. The country in 2019 was at the tail end of digital convergence and the goal seemed unattainable, almost utopian. What followed was a challenge of the first magnitude that really tested our composure, reflexes and stamina. While we were proceeding with all the required initiatives to shape and establish gov.gr, the pandemic “struck” and we had to accelerate even more to ensure the operation of the state in unprecedented crisis conditions.

We were then asked to create a model vaccination program that had to work exemplary. It soon turned out that we succeeded where big countries raised their hands. The Greek vaccination program was characterized as one of the best in the world. At the same time, gov.gr had already become one of the most popular brands in Greece.

We owe this success to an outstanding team of executives and IT. Thanks to the efforts of many and the dedication to the goal of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself, step by step we succeeded. The effort caught on and changed the citizen’s relationship with the state. For the first time in many years the state inspired citizens with confidence in its speed and efficiency.

From the summer of 2023 onwards, the effort continues with Dimitris Papastergiou and Konstantinos Kyranakis in the Ministry of Digital Governance, but also by the entire Government. Digital convergence is a national policy that touches all areas of government work.

Beyond the digitization of all state functions, enext step is to double the professionals with IT skills. This goal will be achieved with special actions at school and in education in general, something that we are already launching at the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports.

We accelerate on the path we have been following until now, with a useful lesson from the intervening five years: Achieving goals is done with systematic and conscious effort on a comprehensive plan. This is how the country changes, this is how problems are solved. This is what we are doing now at the Ministry of Education. One step at a time, one solution each day. Without delays and delays, with hard work and a system we change things. Guided by the belief that great leaps are absolutely possible to achieve”.
