The national secretary of Democratic Action (AD), Piero Maroún, announced his release on Saturday, August 17 after being arrested “as a result of a confusion”, via a WhatsApp audio message on Friday, August 16 in Caracas.
Through X, Maroún explained that the problem arose from “a WhatsApp audio that circulated in several chats,” in which he was “compromised” with “situations of alleged acts of vandalism” for the protests that took place on Saturday, August 17.
“Thanks to God, to all those who interceded and were attentive. I am now in good health, with my family and as always ready to fight for our country,” Maroún said.
The AD national secretary indicated in a comment by X that his phones and those of his family were returned to him after he was released.

The arrest of Piero Maroún
On Friday, August 16, state security forces interviewed him after his arrest while he was having dinner with relatives in a restaurant in the Venezuelan capital, and he was released once the situation was clarified.
AD Secretary General Henry Ramos Allup explained, through X, that Moroún “was detained by three unidentified people, forcing him to board a van” at the time he was “having dinner with his wife and sister-in-law in a restaurant” at 10:20 pm.
The information about the arrest of Moroún, AD’s national secretary of organization, was spread on the same social network by opposition leader María Corina Machado, who confirmed that the events occurred on Friday night, and demanded his release.
Maroún’s arrest occurred in the context of a post-electoral crisis, in which, according to the Executive, more than 2,400 people were arrested during protests against the official result of the presidential elections, in which the National Electoral Council (CNE) awarded the victory to Nicolás Maduro, while the opposition claims that González won and demands the publication of the minutes.
Several opposition leaders arrested
Since the start of the post-election protests on 29 July, several Venezuelan opposition leaders have been arrested, in addition to Piero Moroún.
One of the most recent cases was that of the head of the Command with Venezuela in the state of Portuguesa, Maria Oropezawho was charged on Friday, August 16, with the crimes of “terrorism and inciting hatred.”
State security officials entered María Oropeza’s home without a warrant on August 7 and took her away. The incident was recorded live by the manager through their social networks.
On August 6, it was also confirmed that the politician Freddy Superlano and the journalist Roland Carrenoboth members of the Popular Will party, They are being held in El Helicoide.
State police officers arrested Superlano on July 30. The National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) confirmed Carreño’s arrest on August 2.
