Pienkos and Obonya serve a “love potion” in Gars

On Wednesday at the Josephinum Vienna, Kammersänger Clemens Unterreiner announced details of his first production as director of the Burg Gars Opera: “For me, ‘Love Potion’ is the epitome of summer opera and has never been done before in the 35-year history of the Burg Gars Opera played.” Carolin Pienkos and Cornelius Obonya were introduced as the directing duo for Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore”.

The cast (Unterreiner: “A dream team that fits Gars perfectly”) consists of a mixture of established international and young Austrian singers. The Russian soprano Maria Nazarova, who has already sung this role at the Vienna State Opera, was able to play Adina. A special role for her because: “I had a similar experience in my life as Adina and ultimately happily married my own Nemorino.”

In Gars, the Austrian tenor Matteo Ivan Rasic will make his debut as Nemorino. He is currently in Munich as Tamino on the stage of the Gärtnerplatztheater, and Unterreiner predicts he will have a “world career”. The Upper Austrian soprano Martha Matscheko makes another debut as Gianetta. The Dulcamara is played by Paolo Rumetz, the Belcore – one of Unterreiner’s own signature roles – by the baritone Orhan Yildiz.

The musical director is Levente Török, currently working as first conductor at the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin. The young costume designer Laura Hörmann will design the equipment.

A sparkling Italian aperitivo was presented as a love potion in Gars. Unterreiner also reported that the orchestra house in Gars is to be renovated. Tickets are already available and a 20 percent discount will be offered on World Opera Day (October 25).
