The departmental capital is located on Lake Petén Itzá and is the gateway to the Mayan archaeological sites located in Petén, such as Tikal, Yaxhá, Uaxactún and others. The lake can be explored by boat and you can also visit some beaches on the shore of the lake, as well as other natural sites. There is a small zoo called Petencito on site.
