Omar Al-Tawab could not sleep on Saturday night when his older brother Abdullah told him that the Spanish coach of the Manchester City team, Pep Guardiola, would be in their country – Luxor – and he should present him with a picture.
The 16-year-old chose a suitable picture for the coach – who won his club’s first title in the European Champions League nearly two weeks ago – and it took him two and a half hours to paint it, unlike some paintings that might take him a day or two.
Despite the short time during which he executed the drawing of the coach who completed with the same ears a historic triple for “City”, he was not overcome by sleep.
Questions kept wrestling in his mind: “Will I meet Guardiola.. Surely he will walk.. He will be guarded and crowded, and he may meet with him.. No, I will go, and surely if I meet him and see the drawing, he will appreciate the effort.”
It was an hour when these and other questions subsided, during which the student – in the second year of high school – fell asleep, only to wake up at seven on Saturday morning and disembark with his brother to the Karnak Temple. It is 5 minutes away from their home.
Contrary to what he expected, the coach was not surrounded by a large guard or loved ones, but that did not make it easy for him to take a picture with him when he and his family met him, along with their tour guide and some insurance personnel.
But as soon as the young man – who was nicknamed “Picasso the Luxor” – took out the picture from his bag, it caught the attention of the 52-year-old coach: “I looked after his family and they smiled and asked the bodyguard to allow me to take the picture with him and give him the drawing. He said amazing and he and his family thanked me.”
Omar returned home, but the story is not over yet; Things turned upside down for the young man, who hopes to enroll in the College of Fine Arts. His family members call him from Cairo and everywhere about the famous image, fellow journalists and media professionals ask him to tell the details, the neighbors on the street did not ignore the matter: “Every little bit in the street, Picasso.. Guardiola didn’t tell you the formation of City in front of Al-Ahly in the World Cup.. Well, he told you.” ..”..”.
“I am not able to comprehend the situation and do not know how to sleep. Normally I sleep late, but I wake up late. This time I slept for an hour, and I do not know how to sleep again, nor do I understand what is happening.”
The young man whose talent for drawing appeared in the elementary stage, then the matter developed into an online study until he became fluent in drawing “portraits.” He did not expect what would happen, but rather he believed that the time the artist Ahmed Helmy saw his drawing and republished it through his official accounts, it would not be repeated: “Two years ago.” I almost drew a picture of him and made a mention of him on Instagram, so he replied to me and thanked me and published it with him, and all of that time he wrote about me and I did not expect it to happen again with me.
These are the things that made him believe that he should enroll in the College of Fine Arts to try to develop his talent amidst the increasing support of his family in light of the reactions they receive from their surroundings and relatives.
