After his national Grand Prix in Montreal next weekend, Nicholas Latifi might leave his seat to Oscar Piastri, the reigning F2 champion.
The young Australian, an Alpine F1 Team reservist, would be released by his current employer who would have participated in negotiations to ensure his tenure at Williams.
It is true that Latifi has been rather at half mast lately, dominated by his teammate Alex Albon, but we know that he provides part of the financing for his team.
It is therefore assumed that a forfeiture was discussed and that the Canadian obtained the ability to still race at home in a few days, a first for him since the Grand Prix of Canada has not taken place since 2019 due to the pandemic.
By starting during the season at Silverstone, Piastri would imitate his compatriot Daniel Ricciardo who Red Bull had placed with HRT on the eve of the British Grand Prix in 2011.
Managed by Mark Webber, the reigning Formula 2 champion would thus have the opportunity to learn his skills this year while remaining at Williams in 2023 in order to allow Alpine to extend Fernando Alonso alongside Esteban Ocon.
Piastri should have taken part in EL1 at Silverstone as part of the two days reserved for young drivers and his place might then be taken by another compatriot, the young Jack Doohan (19), also a member of the Alpine Academy.
The two Australians have already had the opportunity to drive an A521 in private tests recently on the Doha track in Qatar.
