There are many ways to introduce Pia Sundhage. First of all, in the news: the 63-year-old Swede is the new coach of the Swiss women’s football team. Also by the CV: she is a star, with an exemplary career as a player then as a coach, notably for the United States, Sweden and Brazil, three of the best teams in the world. But perhaps we should start with what she herself puts forward: Pia Sundhage is “a happy person”.
The 40 minutes of her presentation on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Swiss Football Association (ASF) in Muri (Bern) were enough for her to repeat it three times. Big smile when we point it out to him. “Listen. When I started playing football, it was forbidden for women. When I started coaching, I was barely paid and it wasn’t a full-time job. And look where I am: in a country other than mine, giving a press conference, following having worked on four continents. When I measure how far I have come, I feel that it is natural for me to be happy!”
