Physiological serum is a salty solution that imitates tears. It is perfectly tolerated by the mucous membranes when applied locally. However, this salty liquid can dry out and irritate your skin, so it is not suitable for washing your ears.

Physiological serum: avoid to clean and unclog your ear

The physiological serum is often used to clean the ears because it can push the earwax plug out of the ear canal. Let us add that the salinity of the solution makes it possible to effectively break down earwax and remove it easily.

However, saline is a salty liquid. Just like tears or sea water, it risks drying out and irritating the skin in the ear canal. As this liquid is injected into your ear, there is a risk that your skin will peel off and complications such as infection are expected. Dr. Armine Harichane, ENT and face and neck surgeon

Moreover, cotton swabs are strictly not recommended for cleaning the ears. In fact, the cotton inserted into the ear canal will push the earwax and dead skin towards the back of the ear, risking creating a blockage. The latter will cause hearing loss and ringing. Another risk is hurt the eardrum (tympanic perforation). However, you are not prohibited from using cotton swabs to clean the ear pavilion : their shape is also perfectly suited to this purpose.

What is physiological serum?

The physiological serum is a liquid with the same saline composition as tears or blood plasma. We also speak of solution or physiological fluid. Container 9 g/l of sodium chlorideit meets the requirements of osmotic balance and is perfectly tolerated by the body.

It is applied without problem to the mucous membranes and even in the baby. Rich in sodium chloride, it can also be ingested or injected intravenously to treat dehydration. Physiological serum is therefore an essential health ally. On a daily basis, we happily use it to the care of eyes where the nez.

The composition of physiological serum, too aggressive for the ear

Sterile physiological serum helps clean the mucous membranes without damaging them and without risking infection. Its composition based on purified water and sodium chloride is perfectly respectful of these areas and effectively rids them of impurities; all gently. Adverse effects and allergic reactions to physiological serum are exceptional.

However, as far as the ear is concerned, physiological serum is too aggressive. If you observe certain symptoms following the introduction of physiological serum into the ear, stop its use and consult a doctor. Possible complications from the introduction of this substance into the ear are:

Peeling skin; Itches ; Redness; Swelling of the ear canal; An infection of the ear canal that can cause purulent discharge and pain.

In which cases is the physiological solution strictly contraindicated?

The use of physiological serum in the ear should be strictly prohibited in certain situations, such as in the case of:

diabetes; perforated eardrum; skin problems (such as eczema in the ear canal); weakened immune system; known allergy to this product.

“Saline should especially not be used to clean the baby’s ear, whose skin is even more fragile than that of adults,” emphasizes Doctor Armine Haricane.

How to remove an earwax plug without physiological fluid?

“In order to clean the ear canal, all you need to do is use a little soapy water when showering,” recommends the specialist.

To do this, use a mild soap or shampoo. Soap your ear and the external canal delicately. Rinse with clean water. Tilt your head to the side and add a little more clean water. When you have the full ear feelingwait 1 to 2 minute(s). Tilt your head in the opposite direction to drain the liquid. Blot with a towel. Repeat the process on the other side.

Once this operation is carried out you should feel your empty ear, of healthy skin and your hearing may improve.

Repeat this operation if necessary for several days. You can use this method to ensure the hygiene of your baby or child’s ears.

If this does not work, if you feel pain, or if you notice a discharge of pus, a medical consultation is best.

What is the best product for cleaning ears?

“The simplest, safest, ecological and least expensive solution for cleaning your ears is therefore washing with clear, soapy water,” replies Doctor Armine ENT, ENT surgeon.

The physiological serum is therefore not suitable and even less daily and on children or babies.

Another fashionable alternative exists: the ecological ear pick, a bamboo and fabric accessory straight from Asia. It is used once or twice a week for cleaning the ears to remove excess ear wax at the entrance to the ear canal. “Unfortunately, this solution is not without risk since debris can remain in the ear and a wrong move can lead to an injury to the eardrum,” according to Doctor Armine Haricane.

To clean the ear, you are not prohibited from using a cotton swab or a simple damp tissue.

Otitis: can we use physiological serum?

Saline is not a treatment for infection or inflammation of the ear canal (Plague).

Moreover, if you suffer from ear pain (whether inside the ear or in the external canal) it is better to consult a doctor or seek advice from your pharmacist before trying to inject a liquid into the ear (even plain water). Dr. Armine Harichane.

The treatment of otitis in adults usually relies on taking a medication: “first analgesics for pain, such as paracetamol. Ear drops (containing a local anesthetic and sometimes antibiotics/antifungals) are also prescribed to relieve discomfort and treat infection. In more advanced cases, general treatments should be expected,” continues the specialist.
