Physical Activity on 1-2 Days: Equivalent to Regular Exercise for Heart Health, Study Finds

Focusing physical activity on 1-2 days is as good for the heart as regular exercise, according to a new study. The results of this research, published recently, showed that both training schedules were associated with lower risks of heart problems such as heart attack, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and stroke.

Exercising for at least 150 minutes per week is recommended for good health, but this study suggests that concentrating this activity on two days may provide similar benefits to spreading it out over the entire week. “Active weekend warriors,” who do 150 minutes of weekly exercise in one to two days, showed a 27% reduction in heart risk compared to sedentary people.

Moreover, physical activities concentrated on weekends were also associated with a reduced risk of heart failure, atrial fibrillation and stroke. The researchers therefore emphasize the importance of every physical activity for cardiovascular health, even if it is only carried out during the weekend.

However, it is important to note that this study focused specifically on cardiac risks and it remains to be seen whether these results also apply to other diseases linked to physical inactivity, such as cancer. The researchers therefore plan to carry out further research to verify whether these benefits can be observed in other contexts.

In the meantime, it is recommended that everyone stay physically active, whether by spreading their sessions throughout the week or by concentrating them on one or two days. The important thing is to find a balance that suits everyone and to take care of your cardiovascular health.
