Hakim Juma: My participation in “Kandahar” is a step on the path to globalization
Saudi artist Hakim Jumaa said that the Kingdom’s artists are able to dazzle the world with their acting abilities, if they had the opportunity to participate in international works. In his interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Jumaa revealed the details of his participation in the American film “Kandahar”, accompanied by British artist Gerard Butler, and behind the scenes of his upcoming film project “Dreams of the Age” with the artist Fatima Al-Banawi.
Jumaa said that he tasted both things in order to seize the opportunity to act in the American movie “Kandahar”, continuing: “I suffered a lot to embody the character (Rasul). Short for the makers of the work in English, so they contacted me and asked me to have the clip in Arabic, then they asked that the video be in Pashto.”
The Saudi artist revealed that his friend “Abu Ahmed”, one of the owners of Afghani restaurants in the area where he lives, had an important role in accepting the film to help him translate the required video from Arabic into Pashto.
The movie “Kandahar” starring the British star Gerard Butler, Tom Rice, Ali Fadl, Najban Nina, Elnaz Norouzi, directed by: Rick Roman Wu, and written by: Mitchell Lafroton.
It revolves around the secret agent of the CIA, Tom Harris (Gerard Butler), who travels with a translator to Afghanistan, in order to carry out a secret operation, but they soon escape from the special forces there, led by Rasul (Hakim Juma), following exposing the operation.
Hakim touched on the difficulties that he faced while embodying the character of “Rasul”, the commander of the red unit of the “Taliban” special forces in the American film, continuing: “The training was very difficult. There was special training every day with a training squad from Bulgaria on how to use weapons.” Explosives and car rides for filming, then I sit for 6 hours with a Pashto language proofreader in order to teach me the exits of words and the correct way of pronouncing them. The artist pointed out that «his step in the movie (Kandahar) is a first step towards the globalization that he aims for, saying: «(Kandahar) is a first step towards globalization and an affirmation of the ability of Saudi artists to reach globalization. Hakim pointed out that Saudi artists have a great creative energy that has not yet appeared, due to their regression within the scope of the local and the Gulf region, continuing: “We have a group of distinguished Saudi artists who are capable of creativity all over the world, especially since Saudi Arabia has set its foot on the first levels of the world, we need Only to those who give us the opportunity to prove this talent, and I see that the coming period will witness great success for Saudi artists, if they have the opportunity to do so.
And the Saudi artist chose three artists who are able to represent Saudi Arabia globally if they had the opportunity, and they are the artist Fatima Al-Banawi, the artist Ibrahim Al-Hajjaj and the artist Yaqoub Al-Farhan, continuing: “My choices for the three names are not because they are my friends and teachers to me, but rather for their ability to color and embody all the roles that are presented to them.”
Hakim Jumaa expressed his happiness for showing his film “The King of the Ring” commercially at the end of May, following it had been shown for the first time at the Red Sea Film Festival last year, explaining, “I am a big supporter of the exit of Saudi cinema from the framework of presenting festival cinema to presenting cinema.” Commercial, and thank God, this is the second time that a film has come out of the framework of festivals to commercial cinema, following this happened before in the movie (Kayan).
Pointing out that he hopes during the coming period, especially with the great openness experienced by Saudi cinema, to see new films whose events revolve within the framework of romance, action and horror.
The Saudi artist stated that he is focusing during the coming period on his new movie, “Dreams of the Age”, which is co-starring Suhaib Quds, Najm, Fatima Al-Banawi and Ismail Al-Hassan, and it is directed by Faris Quds, and produced by the Quds brothers. Faris and Suhaib Quds, and co-authored by the two brothers Quds and Omar al-Bahri, and Haditha concluded by saying: “I am very excited regarding the movie, and I focus on it with my soul and blood.”
