FRANK Vogel was fired by the Phoenix Suns on Friday (10/5) WIB, 11 days following his team was swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA playoffs.
Vogel, who led the Los Angeles Lakers to become NBA champions in 2020 before being fired in the 2022-22 season, was hired by the Suns last June to replace Monty Williams, who was fired following the Suns posted a 49-33 win-loss record.
“As I said in the press conference on May 1, management, including myself, and the owners discussed what we needed to do to turn this team around,” said Suns President and General Manager James Jones in an official statement.
“After evaluating the Suns’ results this season, we concluded we had to look for a new head coach. We are grateful for Frank’s hard work and commitment,” he continued.
The Suns appeared disappointing in the regular season and playoffs following being haunted by injuries to three of their star players, Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal and Devin Booker.
“We want to become NBA champions and last season our performance was below expectations. We will continue to evaluate the team’s performance and make the necessary changes to become champions,” said Jones.
The Suns have never been NBA champions but managed to reach the finals for the third time in history in 2021 but lost to the Milwaukee Bucks.
They were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs the last two seasons so they decided to fire Williams. However, Williams’ replacement, Vogel, did even worse with the Suns being eliminated in the first round of the NBA playoffs. (nba.com/Z-1)
