50 years following humans landed on the moon, NASA’s Artemis program is scheduled to launch an almost 100 meter high SLS (Space Launch System) rocket to the moon on Monday, August 29 and launch the Orion space capsule into orbit . There the space capsule is to carry out important tests for planned manned flights. The mission is called Artemis-1 and is intended to initiate excursions to the moon. The spacecraft will launch unmanned from Cape Canaveral and will be in space for several weeks before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere and scheduled to land in the Pacific. If the mission is successfully completed, a first manned test will follow, this time under the name Artemis-2. In 2024, the Artemis-3 mission should land humans on the moon once more for the first time. However, it is still unclear whether the schedule can be met.
In terms of thrust, the SLS is the most powerful rocket ever built by mankind. However, it faces competition from Elon Musk’s space company “SpaceX”. This developed its own giant rocket within a very short time. However, the first flight is still a long time coming.
