PHOENIX- Phoenix City Hall vote 7-2 to increase water rates three times over an 18-month period on Wednesday night.
The City of Phoenix is sending a new message to homeowners: If you don’t conserve water, you’ll pay more for it.
According to the Council meeting minutes, as a result of the approved increase, approximately 17,000 or 4.3% of current residential customers whose usage is below allowance will be affected if they do not make changes to their current water usage.
The impact of the proposed rate change for the median single-family home will be approximately $17 over the three-year period beginning March 2023. If customers reduce their monthly usage by conserving water, and do not exceed allowance amounts, customers would not see any increase in their water rates.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Preliminary estimates show that the average residential customer will see a water service (water usage fee) increase of approximately 6.5% or $2 in October 2023, with additional increases in March 2024 (6.5%) and March 2025 ( 13%).
For wastewater service, the average residential customer will see an increase of approximately 6.5% or $1.60 in October 2023 with additional increases in March 2024 (6.5%) and March 2025 (7%).
The Stormwater Special Tax is expected to increase by $0.25 for most residential customers beginning in October 2023 due to new and expanded permit requirements.
