This Monday, June 5, 2023, the philosopher Cornel West officially announced his candidacy for the American presidential election of November 2024. He will present himself under the banner of the popular left-wing party, created by a former collaborator of Senator Bernie Sanders.

“I am committed to the quest for truth, I am committed to the quest for justice. And the presidency is only a means to pursue that truth and that justice, a cause that I have sought to defend all my life”said this distinguished 70-year-old intellectual, known for his support for minorities, in a video shared on social networks.

He said he wanted “to end poverty, mass incarceration, war and ecological collapse, to ensure housing, healthcare, education and decent wages for all.”

Criticism of the US administration

None of these causes seem to be of concern to leaders of the current American political system, dominated by the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, according to Cornel West.

He called current Democratic President Joe Biden, a candidate for his own succession, a “weak servant of neoliberalism”. As for his predecessor and main challenger, Donald Trump, West considers him a “neofascist”. These statements reflect the nature of this respected intellectual who was never afraid to express his opinions.

He did not hesitate to criticize former President Barack Obama in 2011, whom he nevertheless supported before his arrival at the White House. “He’s a black puppet of the Wall Street oligarchs”he said of the first black president of the United States.

A difficult quest

After having taught at Yale, Princeton and Harvard, Cornel West is currently professor of philosophy at the Union Theological Seminary in New York. Recognized for his award-winning work on race and class struggle in American society, he is one of the most respected intellectuals of the century.

However, it will take more than that to disrupt the age-old duel between Democrats and Republicans in the upcoming presidential election. An NBC poll released last April indicates that the majority of Americans (70% once morest Biden and 60% once morest Trump) do not want a repeat of the last ballot.

The two parties largely dominate the American political landscape. Currently, the slate of candidates includes three Democrats and eight Republicans. “Do we have what it takes? We’ll see. But some of us will fight”promet Cornel West.
