After the first quarter of an hour of the 60-minute practice session, Red Bull KTM factory rider Brad Binder led the classification with a time of 1:29.365 minutes ahead of Marco Bezzecchi (+0.286 sec) and Jack Miller (+0.293). However, the morning’s best time had not yet been achieved: At the end of FP1, title contender Jorge Martin from the Prima Pramac team had already set a 1:29.039 min – although he was the only one in the first session on a fresh soft rear tire, even though the morning times were in the fight for the direct Q2 entry doesn’t play a role.
After 20 minutes of qualifying on Friday followingnoon, Marc Márquez once once more crashed over the front in turn 10, like he did in FP1! He increased his crash record in his last Repsol Honda season to 24 crashes at the fifth-to-last Grand Prix, even though he missed three race weekends and two main races due to injury.
When there were still 22 minutes left on the clock, Gresini Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio (still on medium rear tires) briefly took over the top of the timesheets with a time of 1:29.359 minutes. However, the Roman was immediately pushed out once more by his brand colleague Johann Zarco. The Pramac veteran drove a 1:29.266 min on the soft rear tire.
Shortly before the final quarter of an hour began, the real time hunts began in the fight for the ten Q2 tickets that were available: Aleix Espargaró started with the first time of 1:28 of the weekend, his Aprilia teammate Maverick Viñales was with one 1:28.649 min but soon followingwards faster.
The benchmark time came from Martin with a 1:28.299 min, with Marc Márquez also making his way into the top 10, at least temporarily. Zarco temporarily gave Pramac a double lead. Binder was in third place ten minutes before the end, but World Championship leader Pecco Bagnaia was not in the Q2 positions.
The Ducati factory rider was under pressure for the last run in 14th place and was therefore the preferred driving force for the Repsol-Honda duo Mir and Márquez, but Martin also clung to the rear wheel of his title rival. Pecco tried to get rid of his pursuers, but in vain – and his first fast lap brought no improvement. The next attempt was only enough for 11th place and he had to abandon the last lap!
Regardless of the games, Viñales initially took the top spot on the timesheets, but the time of day was then given to Red Bull KTM ace Brad Binder with a 1:27.943 min! Miller finished second in his Australian home game to secure a double lead for the Austrians.
Martin stayed in fourth place even without any final improvement, while GASGAS-Tech3 driver Pol Espargaró surprised in fifth place. His teammate Augusto Fernández missed promotion to Q2 following a strong FP1 and was also standing in Fabio Quartararo’s way at the end of the day. The Yamaha star, like Bagnaia, has to take the detour via Q1 in 17th place on Saturday. They will meet, among others, Marc Márquez (16th).
