SYDNEY, July 25, WAM/ The Philippine national team revived its hopes of reaching the second round of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, by defeating New Zealand 1-0 today, Tuesday, in the second round of Group A matches in the first round of the tournament, which is currently being held in Australia and New Zealand.
The Philippine national team achieved its first victory in the current version of the tournament, noting that it is participating in the Women’s World Cup for the first time in its history, so that the team has thus won its first three points in the Women’s World Cup in general.
The Philippine national team also achieved the first victory for any of the eight teams participating in the current World Cup for the first time. The Philippine national team currently ranks third in the group by goal difference only behind its New Zealand counterpart.
The Swiss national team was at the top of the group following its goalless draw with its Norwegian counterpart in the other match in the group. The Swiss team raised its tally to 4 points, while the Norwegian team scored its first point in this edition to remain in last place.
In another match today, the Colombian national team concluded the first round matches with a 2-0 victory over the South Korean national team in Group H, to occupy second place in the group, on goal difference only behind its German counterpart, who beat the Moroccan national team 6-0 yesterday.
