A tobacco company that promises to “offer a smoke-free future”. This has been the stated objective of Philip Morris International (PMI), which specializes in tobacco products, for several years. Credible or inflated? The presence of around fifty students in a more than full room during the company’s presentation on Monday at the EPFL Forum – the largest student recruitment fair in Europe – testifies, to say the least, to a certain curiosity.

One of the speakers recalls that PMI is a for-profit company, but that it also wants the public good and therefore “move towards a smoke-free world by offering alternatives”. Products that provide nicotine, but without combustion. “We are all taking part, in the company, in this transformation,” we are reminded several times.
