Collaboration with the most popular Turkish Cypriot influencer, Ibrahim Beycanli, known as “Urban Cypriot” announced – and officially – Cypriot MEP Phidias Panagiotou, causing reactions on social media.
During the announcement of their collaboration, the two of them are seen meeting in the free part of Nicosia with Ibrahim Beycanli passing through the Occupied Territories.
The Cypriot MEP and the Turkish Cypriot influencer state in their message: “The last divided country in Europe is Cyprus. I am Phidias, the most famous Greek Cypriot on social media. And I am Urban Cypriot, the most famous Turkish Cypriot on social media. It has been 60 years since the United Nations forces first came to Cyprus to stop us killing each other. It has been 50 years since the Turkish army occupied 38% of the island. It is such a small island and yet we have to show our passports to get to the other side. On the north side I have been taught to hate this man (with Urban Cypriot pointing to Pheidias) and on this side, I have been taught half the story and taught to hate you too. If another war starts, they might force us to kill each other. The world is moving forward so fast and Cyprus has been stuck with this problem for so many years.”

About a month ago, Phidias Panagiotou had made statements on philenews.com and among other things, he had been asked if he intends to promote the Cyprus issue and what other issues he intends to deal with next. “I said again that my philosophy is “we give and we do”. I will do something about the Cypriot issue, but I don’t want it to be one-sided, I want the Turkish Cypriots to see it and like it, to explain the problem. I’m thinking about what I’m going to do, I’m in talks with Turkish Cypriot youtubers, we’re thinking of doing things (including videos) together, but you’ll see that in the future. I will try to show Europe the problem” he noted.
Reactions on social media
They posted the video on all their social media and the comments started pouring in from the first minute.
Some called Phidias Panagiotou a “traitor” and that what he is doing is “disgusting”, while others were quick to congratulate him for showing “something else” and “moving forward”.
