Pharmacies authorized to manufacture drugs to meet the shortage

To alleviate drug shortages, some pharmacies are authorized to manufacture capsules for their customers.

With us, everything is made to measure, by hand (a pharmacist)

As winter epidemics loom, for many pharmacists, obtaining supplies is a daily headache. Yet, certain pharmacies, such as in La Rochelle, Marseille, and Paris, prepare medicines themselves.

The production of medicines is very regulated

If production is very supervised, the Medicines Agency authorizes ‘preparatory pharmacies’ to manufacture and then deliver capsules and medicines. Various pharmacies can, for example, produce amoxicillin and paracetamol to combat the current shortage of medicines.

A solution that does not make it possible to compensate for the production of large laboratories

At the start of the year in France, around a hundred pharmacies were authorized by the health authorities to manufacture medicines themselves but this solution does not make it possible to compensate for the production of large laboratories.

The strength of our pharmacy is our agility to respond quickly to a request

On TF1, the Delpech pharmacy in the 6th arrondissement of the Capital manufactures its own medicines. Pharmacist, Fabien Bruno specifies: “The strength of our pharmacy is our agility to respond quickly to a request, but we can never maintain a pace like the manufacturers; with us, everything is made to measure, by hand“, warns this pharmacist all the same.

Around 2,300 to 2,400 preparations per day for a Parisian pharmacy

The Parisian pharmacy produces up to 2,300 preparations per day, all medications* combined, or 35% more than at the start of the year. At the end of December 2022, the Delpech pharmacy was carrying out 1,800 preparations per day, currently it is doing around 2,300 to 2,400 preparations.

* The pharmacy buys the “active ingredients” of drugs (the molecule which confers the therapeutic effect) from companies.
